enlightenment
I’d like to pretend
I haven’t found the golden kettle
overflowing in its bounty
at this tender age.
others have children.
others seek the sun.
others find solace in the comfort of even more others.
I find enlightenment.
I’d like to pretend
the grand design of this celestial moment
was more planned out and more elegant
than the bare truth
that the coldness of the air is only a
symptom of my misunderstanding of the
ebb and flow of molecules
others cook food.
others rest their eyes early.
others escape into the pages of murder mysteries.
I find enlightenment.
I’d like to pretend
the morphing of this mind is only
a simple lack of sleep
where counting sheep hasn’t yet manifested
the dreams and aspirations normal for
the type of career I’d love to devour
or the style of clothing I’d find elegant
in my dying days as a poet.
others smile and nod.
others sleep on the snow swept streets.
others gain strength from their environments and prosper.
I find enlightenment.
