I have a desire to rid the world of corrupt, ignorant minds.

Those on the right would immediately read that of some measure of violence. You see, we on the LEFT don’t think that way. We see education (I have been exposed to popular education and quite enjoyed it) and the profound concept of having a dialog about a conflict as the way to end that.

Impatience is probably one of our biggest faults, however. We want the world saved now. I know I do. It’s not happening that way. But, in four years, we’ve doubled the left’s support in Canada (22% nationwide) because we’ve taken the cautious approach of showing everyone the Liberals and Conservatives are one and the same. Tell me, honestly, what are the differences? They both have members who support gay marriage, but officially would never make their parties choose a side on that issue – you see, they have lots of bigots as well who think human rights are only reserved for those of Aryan descent. (exaggerating? hmm. let’s call that satire. They seem to think they own satire, so now I’m reclaiming it.) They both believe in missile defense participation with the Americans. They both believe tax cuts are proof of good economics. They both believe the private sector excels at social services. They both believe student debt is fine and dandy. They both hate the environment, contrary to the love-fest they’re proclaiming for certain basic initiatives (Conservatives oppose Kyoto publicly; Martin opposes it through his lack of policy implementation.) They both lack respect for democracy – Conservatives refuse to debate at citizen’s forums, Liberals refuse to elect their own candidates – preferring to have Martin appoint them for each constituency (see, that’s a *real* democratic deficit.)

Those on the right in Canada have such American envy it’s sickening. You’d think they’d be satisfied with having the biggest penis tower in the world, the CN, (think a certain other kind of envy) but no… we must have military might! no tax zone for corporations! high unemployment! low wages! an elite rich! a lack of any independence from the US! but a lack of allegiance to the UN!

I love the way humour can make complicated policy issues seem so simple. It’s a symptom of ignorance – we don’t have the time, energy or care to really debate substantive issues. I know I can’t even sit through a 36 day election campaign.

Maybe it’s because I’m disgusted with the way Martin is pretending to be the saviour of the Canadian social state – after what he did in his time as Finance Minister, he holds a giant albatross on his neck. The way Harper is hiding from his Republican roots (National Citizens’ Coalition, anyone?) is also revolting. It’s as if the Canadian public should be taken for granted – come on, do they REALLY think we’re all that stupid?

At least those of us on the left can admit when we’re wrong. See, I was wrong buy food at 7-11 today. There, I said it. Wasn’t that easy? Come on, now YOU do it!

peace my friends. peace. we’ll find a way, somehow. let’s start here.
