stuff I don't know
I’m reading the pulp that is Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. I say pulp because while it’s interesting things I don’t know it’s not exactly brilliant writing. Let’s cite a passage to demonstrate my lack of belief that this is brilliant writing:
Although a tough teacher and strict disciplinarian, Langdon was the first to embrace what he hailed as the “lost art of good clean fun.” He relished recreation with an infectious fanaticism that had earned him a fraternal acceptance among his students. His campus nickname–”The Dolphin”– was a reference both to his affable nature and his legendary ability to dive into a pool and outmaneuver the entire opposing squad in a water polo match.”
Not exactly a Salman Rushdie with his words. Although easier to read than Rushdie, and much lighter to digest, I still love that man’s writing.
The point of stating all of this? The fact that while my poetry may be running out (I still have a little bit left in me, but not sure if I truly believe in it anymore) I am starting to get geared up for a novel. yes, a real novel. but the thought of self-imposed criticism that is my tendency is pretty disengaging – I hope I don’t churn out the drivel that is above as Mr. Brown has a tendency to do.
So what does this mean? it means I still recognize how far I have to go to really learn what I need to learn. I don’t even know what that is. I know I like to study political engagement, and the motivators of political engagement. I know that when Shirley Douglas and I share the same room in two days, I will feel engaged. I know I like the eccentricities of people. Perhaps some further sociological studies are required to understand political behaviouralism. perhaps. but at least I know some of it, as I churn it along in my head, will try to make it onto the written page some day.
